Software Testing essentials is accredited!

21 July

We got the wonderful news a short while ago that the new Software Testing Essentials course that we wrote to change the face of software testing training, has been accredited by the Australia New Zealand Testing Board (ANZTB). What does this mean? Well….it means that ANZTB has assessed (and approved) our course in terms of depth of coverage and time spent on each key area of the International Software Testing Qualification Board (ISTQB) Foundation Syllabus. The assessment of the course is vital to make sure that not only does the course teach you excellent testing practices and techniques, it exposes you to enough ISTQB thoughts and approaches to help you with certification needs. An accredited course complies with the ANZTB/ISTQB requirements for teaching time and types of exercises to help bed down knowledge, as well as means that the trainer delivering the course is suitably qualified to be able to give you the best learning experience.

But here at SoftEd we do things a bit different. As you know from my previous blogs, my focus in not just ticking the box for certification, my focus for our training is to build skills and give people the “3 C’s” – Confidence, Competence and (if you want it) Certification. Now our new course is not only accredited to deliver your certification requirements, it takes it to the next step!

The course is ground breaking as it is a lab-based course that focuses on practical skills rather than the current theory based certification courses. This course goes way beyond just covering the syllabus; in building the course the way we did it covers the Foundation Syllabus so that the course prepares you for certification based on the knowledge needs identified in the syllabus, but it also gives you the practical application of the knowledge and allows the development of the skills needed to *really* be a tester, not just a *certified* tester. We cover topics and skills beyond the syllabus that have been gleaned from years of practical testing work, association with the great thinkers in the testing world and cross pollination of ideas from other streams of the software development world. The course is not limited to the Foundation Syllabus as many other certification courses are. Software Testing Essentials includes the syllabus in addition to a huge amount of other key testing knowledge, ideas and approaches not covered in the syllabus.

My main focus was to build a testing course that actually *does* testing. I had to laugh when I read a blog about KWST recently that was very excited about a testing conference (by invitation only) that did testing! I’m lucky that I have been to a number of conferences that not only talk about testing but apply it – however that’s the premise of Software Testing Essentials – learn about it and apply it! We have a custom built application that we test against, we apply testing through the lifecycle (static and dynamically) and we have real world examples of testing both black and white box approaches against our application. We also select, implement and use tools for automation during the course.

Guys, this is so exciting! Now that the accreditation is received we know that we can truly deliver a testing course that gives everyone the best approach to learning the skills, applying the skills and gaining a certification that is meaningful.

I hope to see you all soon, thinking, talking and sharing more about testing!
