Few have contributed more to software development than Ivar. In 1967 he proposed the use of software components at Ericsson and in doing so invented sequence diagrams, and developed collaboration diagrams.

He also used state transition diagrams to describe the message flows between components. Ivar was also one of the original developers of SDL (Specification and Description Language), which became a standard in the telecoms industry.

At Ericsson he also invented Use Cases as a way to specify functional software requirements.

In 1987 Ivar started Objective Systems, which later became Objectory AB where he developed Object-Oriented Software Engineering (OOSE). In 1995 Objectory became Rational Software and Ivar worked with Grady Booch and James Rumbaugh (known collectively as the, Three Amigos) to first create the UML, and later develop the Rational Unified Process (RUP).

When IBM acquired Rational Software he stayed on as an executive technical consultant while starting his new consultancy, Ivar Jacobson International. Here he further developed the UP into the Essential Unified Process (EssUP). A "Practice" centric software development process that integrates successful practices sourced from the three leading process camps: the unified process camp, the agile software development camp and the process improvement camp. Each one of them contributes different capabilities: structure, agility and process improvement. He continues this work today with EssUP integrated into Microsoft Visual Studio Team System and Eclipse.

Ivar will present in Melbourne (24 March) and Wellington (27 March) the keynote:

and the half-day workshop:
